Unlock is a national independent advocacy charity that supports, speaks up and campaigns for people facing stigma, prejudice and discrimination because of their criminal record.

We provide expert advice, training and consultancy for employers to design inclusive, compliant recruitment and HR processes for people with criminal records.

Expert advice

We offer responsive, tailored advice. This may be for a single instance of advice , or we can provide an ongoing source of guidance. This might include, for example:

  • Support in wording a job description
  • Guidance on conducting a risk assessment for a specific role or applicant
  • Advising on any queries that come up once an applicant is in post
  • Support determining whether a criminal record would be relevant to a specific role

Consultancy

We also offer comprehensive consultation packages to help employers embed good practice throughout their organisation and ensure that change is lasting.

We have a series of packages available, which can include, for example:

  • Evaluation of current practice – looking at how organisational policies and approaches align with legal obligations and Fair Chance principles
  • Offering a roadmap for improvement, identifying what steps are needed to change practice so that it is both fair and compliant
  • Support to implement the roadmap step-by-step.

Training

Unlock delivers expert, comprehensive training for employers and for supporting staff. Bespoke training packages are available, tailored to specific organisational needs. Find out more using the options below:
